The name of Mareño comes from the Ikots history, people from Peru who settled on the coast of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec through the Dead Sea in order to prevent Spanish colonization. When the Zapotecs saw people arriving by the sea they nicknamed them mareños, that means "people coming from the sea".

Mareño Surf Tours is a small company formed by the surfer Fito and his guides. We are local surfers that work for what we love: surfing and nature; that’s why we will find for you the best waves and the best places of the moment, always in a friendly atmosphere.

Born in Salina Cruz, he is a surfer for 22 years with a 10 year guide experience. Directs the Mareño's tours always with the idea of finding the best waves. Graduated in Business Administration and First Aid certificate by the Mexican Navy and the Mexican Red Cross. Member of the Union of Surfers and Lifeguard of Salina Cruz. He knows perfectly surf conditions in the area, both tide and wind, for each location.

Trip was great. Fito was eager to get us to the best waves everyday. The big difference between Fito and most other guides/camps is that Fito surfs and wants to get barreled too, so you know he will go where is best. because he is a local he knows all the beachbreaks if the swell is small, too. we started early, up at 6am, and surfed all day, coming back to the house/hotel ~9pm after a dinner. We ate good, healthy food for breakfast and had fantastic Oaxacan restaurant meals in the evenings.
I recommend Mareño Surf Tours to anyone who is serious about first and foremost surfing their brains out while they are in Salina Cruz.
